Queens University Institute of Governance
Design of the new Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research Centre at University Road for Queens University Belfast.
The brief provided by the University included spatial requirements for the various departments of Governance, Public Policy & Social Research and Irish Studies. Primary design issues identified included the need for extensive interaction of staff and for the premises to reflect the international aspirations of the University.
The buildings were originally listed but following a Second Survey Report, an application for de-listing was made to the Environment Service of the DoE, and this was approved in early 2003. However, the existing front elevation, chimneys and roofline on University Road as well as the existing gable to Camden Street make a valuable contribution to the quality of the streetscape within the Queens Conservation Area, and the proposals were designed to ensure that these elements are maintained and enhanced, to reflect the commitment of the University to sensitive development.
The development includes for individual staff offices and meeting rooms, as well as post-graduate research offices and seminar rooms. The entrance hall and exhibition area have been designed to accommodate groups of visiting guests and encourage inter-disciplinary contact and consultation in a stimulating and informal setting.
The project will provide a fully accessible environment in accordance with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 as well as the Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001.
